Mutable Signs of Astrology - Gemini, Virgo, Saggitarius & Pisces
If you have read about the modalities, then you will be slightly familiar with the Mutable Signs.
Let’s take a deeper look at the mutable signs and how they are all linked together.
Mutable signs are part of the modalities. In astrology, the signs are grouped in fours known as a quadruplicity, based on their qualities.
These qualities are Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable.
For each element, there is one of each quality. The qualities are one of the building blocks of astrology and are based on how each type of quality engages with the world.
What are the Mutable signs?
The mutable signs are:
- Gemini (air)
- Virgo (earth)
- Sagittarius (fire)
- Pisces (water)
The mutable houses are the third, sixth, ninth and twelfth.
So if someone had more planets in the 3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th houses, their energy and the energy of the chart would be weighted toward mutable and flexible qualities.
Mutable Sign Summary
Mutable signs are concerned with changing things into something else. This is not transforming as much as it moving on to something else.
The emphasis is on adaptability in the sense that while the fixed signs maintain and resist change when the sun is in a mutable sign, the mutable accept it.
The mutable signs end a cycle and lead on to the beginning of the new quadruplicity.
The adaptability of mutable signs makes them light on their feet in a crisis. They travel well in and among different types of people, exchanging ideas on what to do next.
With quickly evolving natures, they understand change intimately and are at home in chaos.
Mutable signs experience the sense of multiple selves, and sometimes struggle to feel real and solid in themselves.
Their sense of identity is loose, and like a kaleidoscope, always changing.
But over time, a core sense of self-emerges, based on this changeability, but transcending it, too.

They’re flexible, adaptable and thrive on change. Their swift changeability allows them to see life from many different perspectives.
Mutable signs have a restless nature that comes from being the breakdown before the breakthrough — in preparation for the end of the season.
They bring people and ideas together in an innovative synthesis.
Mutable Sign Differences: What’s are the differences based on the element?:
Each of the mutable signs mutates itself with the tools of its particular element.
Mutable air (Gemini) rides the circuits of ideas, taking in and disseminating what it collects.
Mutable earth (Virgo) changes through purification of the body and by being a force of healing for others.
Mutable fire (Sagittarius) evolves through learning, travel, seeking knowledge — and using intuition to glean the truth from all this experience.
Mutable water (Pisces) dwells in the collective depths, and contains all the signs as the last one.

Now that we have had an overview guide to Mutable Signs, let’s look at each of the signs in a bit more detail.
Gemini
(August 23rd – Sept 22nd)
What you’ll Learn
The first air sign, Mercury-ruled Gemini is a sign of the air and therefore is concerned with communication, words and the mind. It is ruled by Mercury, along with Virgo. Geminis will adapt themselves to their environment and thus not cause things to persist. While the fixed signs adjust the setting and situation to their needs, wants and goals, the mutable signs adapt their needs, wants and goals to the environment.
In this way, they cease to make the changes necessary to keep things as they are and allow almost any kind of constant change. This is true of all the mutable signs. This is not to say that mutable people never resist change, or that they never try to achieve goals at odds with the environment, but it is to say they are more likely to give up or to give in or blend in than the fixed signs are.
Gemini never feels complete and the mutable sign Gemini, the sign of duality is always on the search for something, trying to find that one person or thing that will complete them.
Virgo
(August 23rd – Sept 22nd)
What you’ll Learn
The middle sign is represented by the middle of the earth, not entirely on the surface and not quite deep down either. Stuck and indecisive.
Virgo lives in their world on an earthly mental plane. Being one of the mutable signs, they observe and think with quick analytical precision, and are flexible, helpful and stable and get tangible results.
Virgo is critical and analytical. In this way, Virgo brings to an end something which was previously believed. False beliefs, subject to analysis and given up. It is the sixth signs and rules our daily lives.
Virgo is the least physical of the earth signs.
Sagittarius
(November 23rd – December 22nd)
What you’ll Learn
Sagittarius is the last fire astrology sign.
The Jupiter-ruled visionary of Sagittarius leans toward the philosophical, the bottom part of the fire that is mystical and out of reach. It is one of the mutable signs.
Sagittarius is idealistic and creative, the fire energy of Sagittarius astrology gears towards higher ideals and philosophical, wandering pursuits.
Sagittarius is the ninth sign. It is a seeker of knowledge, its crucial phrase is “I know”. Sagittarius brings about the end of ignorance by discovering the truth – according to Jupiter ruled Sagittarius – as it seeks final knowledge (the end of knowledge).
Pisces
(February 19th – March 20th)
What you’ll Learn
The final water sign and one of the mutable signs, Pisces is represented by the small creek, by piling up a handful of dirt, you can make it flow another direction when it rains, it can flow north when it generally flows south because the rainwater overtakes it.
Pisces brings about the end of emotions by dissolving into the oneness of Neptune, of all things and becoming lost and at the same time, connected.
Pisces is overly flexible and too adaptable, being mutable water.
